Situated in the heart of the city, Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens boasts a collection dating back to 1846, offering visitors a treasure trove of surprises. Whether you’re looking for fun activities with the kids, an afternoon of cultural enrichment, or an engaging outing for curious minds, this museum has it all.

Unmissable Attractions

The museum’s most famous exhibit is Wallace the Lion, a beloved figure from a 19th-century wild animal show led by the renowned African tamer, Martini Maccomo. Wallace joined the museum’s collection 135 years ago following Maccomo’s death and has since captivated countless visitors. Among the museum’s many fascinating exhibits, you’ll also find the first Nissan car produced at the Sunderland factory in 1986.

Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens is home to unique and rare artifacts, including the only known British example of a gliding reptile, the remains of a Siberian walrus, and an extensive collection of Sunderland Lustreware pottery. While the Pottery Gallery may occasionally close for private events, it’s a must-see when open.

Art enthusiasts can explore the museum’s Art Gallery, which features a significant collection of works by L.S. Lowry, an artist who spent considerable time in Sunderland. With exhibitions that change regularly, there’s always something new and exciting to discover. Plan your visit and explore current exhibitions at sunderlandculture.org.uk/whats-on.
