by | Nov 24, 2021 | Explore Newcastle

Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North, the UK’s most iconic piece of public art, first spread its wings in February 1998. Standing at an impressive 20 meters high and with a wingspan of 54 meters, this colossal sculpture is taller than four double-decker buses and as wide as a jumbo jet. It is reputed to be the largest angel sculpture in the world. Situated on a hill in Low Eighton, Lamesley parish, the Angel of the North attracts approximately 150,000 visitors annually. The site is promoted by NewcastleGateshead Initiative, aiming to inspire people to visit, live, learn, work, and invest in Newcastle and Gateshead.

The statue’s striking red hue makes it a prominent landmark visible from various points in Newcastle, including the A1 and A167 roads at Low Fell and the East Coast Main Line. Visitors can park in a small car park off Durham Road and take a short walk to reach the statue. Admission is free, and the site is accessible all day.
