Rivington Pike
Located between Bolton and Chorley off the A673, Rivington Pike is the most westerly high point of Winter Hill in the West Pennine Moors. The Pike Tower is a prominent local landmark and is located on the summit at 1,191 feet in height. There are numerous ways to reach it, but the best route is through the Rivington Hall Barn. From there, the summit is only 3 miles to the top. The top family favourite is the path leading through the beautiful Rivington Terraced Gardens.
The ascent is steep but once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with magnificent views. If the weather allows, you can see as far as Cheshire, the Lake District, and the Isle of Man. While soaking in nature’s beauty, you also get to enjoy a panoramic view of Winter Hill, Lever Park, Macron Stadium, and Bolton Wanderers. So put on your walking shoes, grab a backpack, and discover the wonders of Rivington Pike with your family and friends.
Direction: The walk begins at Rivington Hall Barn. The route is easy to find. Just drive to Rivington Lane and on reaching the Great House Barn, turn right on the driveway opposite. The road leads to Rivington Hall and Rivington Hall Barn. Use the postcode BL6 7SB on your SATNAV or try Google Map. There is a large car park at Rivington Hall Barn and parking is free.
Interesting Fact: Walking the pike on Good Friday is a longstanding tradition, and people ascend the pike from before dawn to after dusk.
